Sticking Together to Beat Cancer

In one way or another, most of us have been affected by cancer. While you may not have been diagnosed, you probably know someone who has. Whether you have lost loved ones to this terrifying condition, or you have friends who have lost loved ones to cancer - it is not something that any of us can hide from. In fact, it’s essential that we stand up and stick together, as long as there’s hope for a cure.

I’m reminded of a child’s fable. I don’t remember the name or the origins, but the message is strong. A father is distraught that his three sons continuously bicker and fight, and that they’re unable to stick together. When a dragon threatens the town, the three sons are sent off to fight the dragon. Before they go, the father asks them to gather a bundle of sticks and bring them to him.

“Can you break one of those sticks?” He asks his sons. One by one, the arrogant sons take a stick from the pile and break them, easily and quickly. “Very good,” says the father. “But can you tie the bundle together and break ALL of the sticks?” The sons tried and tried to no avail. They were unable to break the bundle of sticks. Wisely, the father said, “One by one, we are all easy to break, but if we stick together like this bundle of twigs, we are unbreakable.”

It’s the same with any seemingly insurmountable feat – from the small disappointments in life to things like cancer and the devastation it brings. If we stick together, we CAN excel. Marc Lebron lost his aunt to cancer, and soon after, found out that his beloved mother was diagnosed with cancer as well. She is a survivor, but once cancer visits, it leaves an impression that cannot be forgotten. That’s one of the reasons Marc will be participating in the Nations Triathlon in Washington DC as a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training.

His goal is to raise more than $2900 that will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This money will likely go toward research…all aimed at finding a cure. If you donate, you’re not donating to Marc Lebron. You’re adding yourself to the bundle of men and women who are standing up and fighting this disease. Whether you can afford $1 or $1000 – you can be sure that it DOES and WILL make a difference. I ask you to visit his donation page and read his story, and then donate anything you can. Sandra Bullock’s Big Announcement: Her Adopted Baby

If you love Sandra Bullock, you’ve probably been heartbroken for her after hearing all about her husband, Jesse James’ infidelities. Just after her Oscar win, everything came to light – talk about raining on someone’s parade. Sandra has always been a favorite actress of mine, simply because she’s so down-to-earth and genuine – with a great sense of humor. So, I was pretty upset for her.

On top of that, the Razzies (awards for worst actors and actresses) were completely tactless about their little mishap. Just before the Academy awards, the Razzies gave Sandra Bullock the award for worst actress in Something About Steve.

With her ability to laugh at herself, Sandra showed up to accept the award. Just recently (in the midst of the whole cheating situation), it was announced that Sandra accidentally ran off with the REAL original Razzie award and not the cheap knock-off the winners are presented with. The spokesperson didn’t contact Sandra out of respect for her ‘situation,’ yet felt it was ok to announce it to the world, further adding to her embarrassment.

Now, we’ve just received news that Sandra Bullock has adopted a baby and in fact, has been keeping his adoption a secret for the past three months! Little Louis Bardo Bullock was adopted from New Orleans, and is perhaps one of the luckiest kids in the world. Not only is his mother incredibly rich and beautiful, but she has a heart of gold. Knowing that Sandra had little Louis at home as she gave her acceptance speech at the academy awards certainly makes her words take on a new light.

During her speech, Sandra gave props to the “moms who love the babies and the children no matter where they’re from.” Of course, she was referring to her role as Leann Tuohy in ‘The Blind Side,’ a woman who adopted a grown boy who was without a family. Still, we can assume that she was thinking of her own tiny son back at home. I think it’s wonderful that Sandra has a very worthy person to bestow all of her love to, and I think both Sandra and her new baby are lucky to have each other!

Girlz Lyfe: Movie Review- Brothers

With Tobey McGuire and Jake Gyllenhaal, I was interested in seeing Brothers from the moment I saw the preview. Gyllenhaal plays the bad boy brother, Tommy Cahill, and in the beginning of the movie, McGuire, Sam Cahill, is picking him up from prison.

Sam is a captain in the Marines, and the brothers are obviously like night and day – while Sam is everything his father has ever hoped for, Tommy is nothing but a disappointment and is constantly reminded of that fact.

Sam is shipped off to Afghanistan, leaving his wife (Natalie Portman) and two young daughters behind. When his helicopter is shot down, he’s presumed dead, and the grieving family mourns their soldier. Here’s where the movie gets a little ‘iffy.’

Tommy Cahill, who is normally drunk most of the time, is suddenly sobered up by his brother’s death and steps in to help Grace (Portman) with her daughters. I don’t think Jake plays his part convincingly enough…although there’s a scene where the adorable oldest daughter and Tommy have a heart-to-heart about being different that is absolutely heart-wrenching.

As the mourning continues and Tommy tries his best to take care of Grace and the girls, there is some romantic tension felt between the two, who share a late night kiss before coming to their senses. Captain Sam Cahill is actually not dead, but has been captured and submitted to unspeakable torture by Afghan soldiers. He’s forced to do some terrible things to stay alive – including a bone-chilling murder he doesn’t want to commit.

When he comes home, things are certainly very different. He’s traumatized, obviously, and his family doesn’t understand him – especially his oldest daughter. In a fit of anger during a family dinner, the daughter reveals that her mother Grace and uncle Tommy have been ‘having relations’ while he was gone. Already paranoid about the relationship between his brother and wife, Sam snaps.

Must See Scene:

Tobey McGuire has never put fear into me the way he did in the ‘kitchen scene.’ He clearly has lost it, and he’s breaking down on the inside. He did a fabulous job with this scene. However, one of the most heart-breaking parts of the movie was at the end, when the police arrive. Earlier in the story, Tommy tells his niece about almost drowning and being saved by Sam when they were kids. At his final breaking point, as the police are coming forward to tackle him to the ground, Sam looks to Tommy and says, “I’m drowning, Tommy.”

Wonderful movie and I think it’s fabulous to highlight what some of our soldiers go through when they come home from war. I don’t think the movie can give us a full understanding, but to bring awareness to it is extremely important. I’d give this movie an 8 out of a possible 10 and would definitely recommend it.

Healthy Skin and Hair: Beauty Recipes

After the pants and long sleeves of winter, your skin may need a boost to look really beautiful in those capris, skirts, and flip-flops. Maybe your hair could use some extra shine and bounce too! Below you’ll find some easy recipes you can create using stuff you’ll find in your own kitchen – and that will work miracles for your skin and hair.

Honey and Cinnamon

Honey and cinnamon have been called nature’s cure-all, because of their superior healing powers and their ability to refresh and replenish skin. Simply mix equal parts to create a paste that can be used to exfoliate and brighten your skin. It’s great for lips, hands and faces and removes the dull, dead skin that can cover up your beautiful, younger-looking skin. It’s also wonderful for acne – just dab some on trouble spots and leave it over night.

Mayonnaise

Yep – mayonnaise. Apparently, this rich condiment is especially wonderful for your skin and hair. Apply it straight from the jar onto your face in a thin layer like a mask and allow it to sit for ten minutes. Be careful about putting it too close to your eyes, as the vinegar can be irritating. Rinse it off in warm water and then splash your face with cool water to close the pores. You’ll notice that your face feels cleaner and fresher.

You can also use mayonnaise as a hair conditioner – simply spread about half a cup through your hair, saturating each strand. Allow it to sit for about fifteen minutes and then rinse thoroughly before shampooing as usual.

Vinegar and Water

Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and use it as a hair rinse to remove the product build up that can leave your tresses flat and dull. You’ll notice shinier, fresher, lifted hair that is unbelievably clean and soft.

Strawberry Facial Scrub

Grind or blend 2 to 3 strawberries and mix in a teaspoon of honey, and a teaspoon of olive oil. Using your fingertips, rub the mixture on your face in small circles. After going over every inch of the face, rinse in warm water and then splash with cold water to close the pores.

Tea Bags

Tea bags are wonderful for dark circles under the eye. Simply run a teabag or two under hot water and allow it to sit for a moment. Squeeze out the excess and allow them to sit on your eyes for a few minutes. This also works for puffy eyes due to being tired or allergies. For an alternative treatment, pop the teabags in the fridge for a few minutes and let them cool off before applying them in the same way.

Spring 2010 Make-Up Tips

Wherever you’re heading this spring, you want to look your absolute best. You’ve chosen the super-cute outfit, the matching shoes and a perfect amount of glitzy accessories – but you also want to make sure that your makeup is applied correctly and that you’re wearing just the right amount and shades. Below, you’ll find some makeup tips that even the celebrities swear by!

Mascara:

Fake lashes are popular right now because everyone wants those full, thick and beautiful eyelashes. However, many of us don’t have the luxury of our own personal stylists to apply them professionally and correctly so that they look great. You can create longer, fuller lashes with mascara using the following tips.

When applying the mascara, wiggle the wand back and forth starting at the base of the lashes. This is how the mascara gets applied evenly and how the lashes get separated – preventing clumps.

For fair-skinned girls, remember that black mascara and eyeliner can be very harsh during the day. Opt for a soft brown or even a colored mascara to match your shadow.

For the bottom lashes, rather than trying to comb the brush through, wiggle it back and forth for the lashes to pick up the mascara. Rihanna has some of the most beautiful eyes in Hollywood – check out her perfect, pretty lashes.

Lipstick:

Even heading into spring, red lipstick is hot. The trick is not to ‘overdo’ your look when you’re
wearing that piping hot shade. Use only minimal eye makeup when wearing the red lipstick.

Here’s the rule – if you’re wearing a lot of shadow and mascara, your lips should be glossy or neutral-colored. If you’re wearing the cherry red lipstick, you should have only a tiny amount of eye makeup.

Neutral lips and glossy lips are always popular, and pretty much go with anything, so if you’re unsure, just use those. Lots of gloss comes with pretty tints that add color to the lips without overdoing it.

Blush:

You’ve heard the rule – smile, and then apply the blush to the apples of your cheeks. This is a good rule, but don’t be afraid to experiment. When applying the blush, brush it across the bottoms of the ‘apples’ of your cheeks and then continue up into the hairline at an angle. Look at Reese’s fresh-faced look and see how she rocks the rouge.

Maybe wherever you live, you'll be heading out for a fun St. Patrick's Day parade or an evening party featuring tall glasses of Guinness.

Maybe you'll toss on a green t-shirt and call it a day. We thought it would be interesting to feature a little St. Patty's Day trivia about how others celebrate!

In the southern US, parades roll through town decorated in green and glitter – and riders toss goodies to those lined up along the sidewalks and streets. What are those goodies? Usually cabbages, carrots, onions and other veggies. Just the right items for a holiday stew.
St. Patrick's Day in Ireland is huge – understandably. Not only do most people attend mass and other religious services, but after that come the parades, the beer, and the parties. Most people wear shamrocks and green, white and orange for the flag of Ireland. It's not uncommon to see boys and girls with green hair and shamrocks painted on their faces!
In Tokyo, parades also happen but the highlight is the 'voucher girls.' Beautiful girls are selected to hand out free beer coupons, and tourists and locals alike celebrate with Guinness and other drinks.
St. Patrick may be the 'patron saint of Ireland,' but he wasn't born in Ireland – in fact, it's not known where he was born.
There is also some confusion on whether the actual holiday is a celebration of St. Patrick's birth or death – some say death and others argue his birth.
The term “kiss me, I'm Irish,” comes from the belief that kissing the Blarney stone in Ireland is lucky. If you can't kiss the stone, you might as well kiss an Irish person!

So what is the meaning of St. Patrick's Day exactly? Well, most people will tell you that it's a day for spiritual renewal – and for praying for the missionaries around the world. So whether you're celebrating for your religious or spiritual beliefs or because it's an excuse to get together with friends and have a great time...don't forget to wear green or you could receive a nasty pinch.

Girlz Lyfe Review of Crazy Heart

As a sucker for movies and books that showcase the human spirit overcoming difficulties, I knew from the trailer that I had to watch this movie.

‘Bad’ Blake (played by Oscar winner Jeff Bridges), a washed-up country music singer, spends his days driving from small town to small town to make it to gigs in bowling alleys and tiny bars. As if this isn’t enough of a thorn in the side to this once great star, he lives with the knowledge that the young singer he mentored (played by Colin Ferrell) is now selling albums like crazy with a career that is better than ever.

It’s in one of those small towns where Bad meets a journalist named Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is interested in interviewing him for the newspaper. After a few meetings, their witty banter turns into a relationship which is fed through long-distance trips after Bad goes back on the road. His alcoholism quickly becomes an issue for Jean, who has a very young son.

It’s this alcohol problem that has caused Bad to lose several wives and miss out on the life of his 30-something year old estranged son. However, the interaction between Bad and Jean’s son inspires the country singer to contact his son, who wants nothing to do with him. Despite Jean’s pleas, Bad continues to drink. After a scary incident where Bad loses Jean’s 4-year old son, she breaks off the relationship. It’s somewhat of a wake up call to the singer, who is heartbroken and riddled with guilt.

I think this movie is a beautiful example of how the human spirit can endure, and how we can all change for the better if we only find a reason and some hope to see us through. While I don’t want to ruin the ending, I’ll say that I was satisfied with the way the story turned out. It was very interesting, and kept my attention throughout. I’d have to give this movie a 6 out of a possible 10. One of my favorite parts of the movie is the cleansing process Bad goes through as he writes the ‘hit’ song that won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. You’d definitely be missing out if you didn’t watch this one!

Oscar Winners and the Results of our Picks

Last night, the 82^nd annual Academy awards took place, making some actors, directors, writers and others very happy as they received some well-deserved recognition for their work. Last week, Girlz Lyfe predicted a few different winners for you and it’s time to see how our predictions turned out…

Best Picture: There were so many fabulous movies nominated – all deserving of Oscars, but The Hurt Locker took the prize. I personally think the cast and crew of this movie won so many awards last night that they were running out of people to thank – but it was well-deserved!

Actor in a Leading Role: We were right when we said Jeff Bridges was likely to take this one, and he did. With a great speech that thanked his colleagues, fellow cast members and the director – he wrapped it up with a wonderful tribute to his wife and daughters.

Actress in a Leading Role: As predicted, Sandra Bullock won the award. In her usual graceful and funny manner, the actress mentioned the other four nominees, including her ‘lover,’ Meryl Streep. She also ended on a very heartfelt and tearful thank you to someone very important to her – her own mother.

Actor in a Supporting Role: Christoph Waltz was a graceful and fun winner of this award, and really deserved it. He was up against some tough competition and it was fun to watch him gain recognition for his hard work.

Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique for her role in Precious. With a beautiful acceptance speech, Mo’Nique thanked her husband for his support and for his encouragement to not ‘do what’s popular, but to do what’s right.’ We predicted this one correctly – yay!

2009 was a year full of fabulous movies. This Sunday, some of the finest directors, writers and actors that took part in those movies will be recognized with prestigious Oscar awards – and we have some predictions for you. Let us know in the comments whether you agree or disagree – and what your favorite 2009 movies were!

Best Picture:

While The Blindside was a fantastic telling of Michael Oher’s childhood and adoption by the Tuohy family, I have to say that I think Avatar is going to take this award. With amazing graphics and fantastic actors – I’d say this movie is going home with an Oscar for best picture.

Actor in a Leading Role:

This one is so difficult – Morgan Freeman is an amazing actor and certainly deserves an Oscar for his performance in Invictus, but I’d say the winner is going to be Jeff Bridges for his role in Crazy Heart. It’s a never-before seen side of Jeff that really pulled at the heart strings.

Actor in a Supporting Role:

Matt Damon. *Swoon* It would be absolutely fabulous if he took home the Oscar, and aside from his smoking hot good looks – he actually can act! However, I can’t get over Stanley Tucci’s performance as the murderer in The Lovely Bones. It was chilling, and I think he’ll take the prize.

Actress in a Leading Role:

I’m going with Sandra Bullock with this one for The Blind Side all the way. This is so different from Sandra’s usual performances – and she was outstanding in her role as Luann Tuohy. Of course, the favorite would be Meryl Streep from Julie and Julia, but I think Sandra’s ready for her first ever Oscar win.

Actress in a Supporting Role:

Twilight star Anna Kendrick got to show off a more serious acting ability in Up In the Air, but my money is on Mo’Nique for her performance in Precious. One word – wow. Absolutely believable and she deserves recognition for bringing that role to life.

Of course, a ton more awards will go out for various categories, including best sound editing, best directing, best writing, etc. But our concern is with the celebrities above and which will earn the rights to brag about their gleaming Oscar. What are your opinions?

Dancing with the Stars 2010 Lineup

Well, many of you are heartbroken that the Bachelor is over – and whether or not you’re happy with his choice, it seems he’s fallen for the beautiful Vienna.

Don’t get too down in the dumps as you prepare to wait for next season, because the Dancing with the Stars 2010 lineup has just been announced.

Something tells me the show’s going to be very interesting this season…

Pamela Anderson – Wow! Pamela has been stirring quite a few different pots, including diving into the fashion scene with a new eco-friendly line, but we’re all about to see how well she can shake her tail feathers.

Evan Lysacek – As an Olympic gold medalist, this figure skater is no stranger to dancing. He will prove to be an interesting addition to this year’s lineup.

Shannon Doherty – From teenage drama queen on 90210 to heart-attack-inducing host of Scare Tactics and a slew of gigs in between, Shannon has proven that she’s multi-talented. Let’s see if dancing is included in her list of abilities!

Nicole Scherzinger – Again, no stranger to dance, this Pussycat Doll should have no problem with the hours of training.

Jake Pavelka – So, some people can make a career from reality television.

Buzz Aldrin – I wonder if he’ll do the moonwalk. Ok, that was corny.

Chad Ochocinco – There may not be anyone to tackle, but this big guy is no stranger to strenuous training and physical stamina. Let’s see if he can keep a rhythm.

Aiden Turner – ‘All My Children’ hottie Aiden Turner is likely to be the favorite among the girlies. One quick turn of the hips might mean it’s all over for the rest of the guys!

Niecy Nash – From Reno 911 to Clean House to Dancing with the Stars. This woman undoubtedly has talent, but can she wiggle her way to the win?

Erin Andrews – Sportscaster Erin Andrews may be the favorite for the men this year, but only because she’d be more recognizable to them. She will definitely have competition from Nash, Scherzinger, and Anderson.

Kate Gosselin – Perhaps the most shocking will be Kate’s appearance on the show. You can pretty much bet that anyone she partners with will be doing the dance moves she prefers, though!

Well, that’s it – a very interesting lineup, no doubt. It’ll be great to see how these guys and gals compete and what they bring to the dance floor.

We all lead busy lives – from school to work to families and taking care of the household and finances…it’s easy to feel stressed out from time to time. Below, you’ll find 10 tips for busting your stress and recharging your batteries.

1. Don’t stuff your anger down. Sure, the last thing you want to do when someone makes you angry is scream and stomp like a 2 year old, but anger is a natural emotion and should be expressed somehow. Write down how you’re feeling or work it off at the gym, but make sure you get a chance to expend that angry energy somehow!

2. Engage in music therapy. Do you have a song or more than one that just makes you feel great? When you’re feeling stressed out, take a moment and play a few of your favorite songs. Turn the stereo or the MP3 player up and sing along.

3. Take deep breaths. Learning to breathe properly can make a huge difference in the way that you feel. As you inhale, your chest should rise as your lungs fill, and as you exhale, your body should move back to a relaxed position. Take ten minutes of slow, deep breathing when you feel stressed.

4. Write down what you’re thankful for. When you’re having a terrible day and feel stressed and yucky, writing down the positive things in your life can really put things into perspective for you – and help you beat the stress!

5. Take a long, candle-lit bubble bath. Throw in some scented oils or sachets and really pamper yourself for a while. You deserve it, and it can really give you the chance to relax after a stressful day!

6. Don’t underestimate the power of laughter. Laughter reduces stress, and some experts believe it naturally releases hormones that increase your sense of well-being. So, watch a comedy show, read something you normally find funny, or have a few laughs with friends.

7. Exercise properly. Physical activity can allow you to work off stress – and of course, it’s wonderful for you as well. At least three times a week for an hour or so, make sure you’re exercising your body and giving your mind some peace!

Ah…pancakes. Warm, fluffy and dripping with rich syrup – they’re the perfect breakfast comfort food, aren’t they? In a perfect world, there would be a day dedicated to celebrating these sweet additions to the breakfast table, and everyone would get their own free stack of pancakes.

Oh wait – there is!

Today is National Pancake Day at IHOP, and every guest receives a free short stack (3) of pancakes. IHOP only asks that you consider donating to local children’s hospitals through the Children’s Miracle Network or other local charities. Now that’s a fabulous deal – free food and a reminder to help out the organizations that take care of our little guys and gals!

In honor of Pancake Day – here are 10 great things you can add to your pancakes that will take them from simply delicious to ‘mmmmmmm.’

1.Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on your pancakes before adding the syrup. This adds a delicious flavor to your pancakes – and hey, some bonus protein.
2.Add fresh fruit to your pancakes – strawberries, blueberries, or anything else you love. Just slice them up and mix them right in the batter! Healthy and nutritious.
3.Skip the syrup and have your pancakes with a side of apple butter. This breakfast is hardy and so good!
4.Make bun-sized pancakes and place sausage between two of them. With a tiny bit of syrup, you’ve got a meal on the go.

8.Add nuts! Chopped pecans, peanuts, almonds – this is a great way to add some additional nutrition and make your meal more interesting.
9.Forget the syrup and add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top of your pancake stack. Who says ice cream isn’t for breakfast?
10.Use a bit of flavored coffee syrup in the pancake batter for a more delicious pancake. There’s hazelnut, pecan praline, chocolate – and many other flavored syrups.

Sometimes, you just have to take your sweet time…and that’s what this blog post is all about! This dessert is super-easy to make, and it’s really delicious. It’s definitely worth the extra cardio, and you can check out the low fat version below the regular recipe.

Fruity Trifle

You’ll Need:

1-2 Medium Slices Pound Cake or Angel-Food Cake
2/3 Cup Vanilla Ice Cream
2/3 Cup Freshly Sliced Strawberries Sprinkled with Sugar
½ Cup Fresh Blueberries
2 Tablespoons Strawberry Syrup for Drizzling

In a pretty dessert bowl or cup, place one slice of the pound cake and then drizzle some of the strawberry syrup on top. Then, cover the cake with half of the vanilla ice cream.

Use half the strawberries to layer on top of the ice cream, and go around the side of the bowl with the blueberries, so the pretty blue color can be seen through the glass. Add the other slice of cake, drizzle again with the strawberry syrup, and layer the ice cream, strawberries and then the blueberries around the sides.

Make it low fat by skipping the sprinkled sugar and strawberry syrup. Use only fresh fruit and substitute low fat flavored yogurt for the ice cream. Practically anything can be added to this desert – granola, nuts, or another favorite food.

This makes a huge dessert, so grab an extra spoon and share it with someone really special!

Book Review: Dear John

In honor of the movie, I decided to go ahead and check out Nicholas Sparks’ book, Dear John. I’ve read several of his books, although I have to admit that most of the time, I enjoy the movies more. Since I haven’t seen the movie Dear John yet, I haven’t been influenced, so this is a pure review of the book and not a comparison of the movie.

The book is told from John’s point of view, which is characteristic of Nicholas Sparks. I noticed right off that although we start out learning about John’s history and that of his coin-collecting, meticulous father, it’s interesting. I followed along without being bored at all.

The book really picks up in pace when John meets Savannah. The two hit it off right away and the love story is charming. It’s more realistic than some of the usual flowery, fairytale romances. Maybe I’m just cynical, but after the first day or two into the relationship, it seems like things are going really fast and there’s not enough detail in the book. When John tells Savannah he loves her, you don’t really feel like it’s logical or that he even could so quickly. Had there been more detail, it’s possible that it would have been more believable.

John has to return to Germany, where he is stationed, so the two write back and forth. The letters are sweet and it’s charming to see the two so dedicated to each other. Savannah has also alerted John to the possibility of his father having a condition, which could explain his strange ways and the patterns of his life – ultimately urging John to have a better relationship with his father.

After 9/11, John signs on for two more years in the army, which puts a serious strain on the relationship. I don’t want to spoil the book or the movie, so I’ll say that there are some serious trials and tribulations that happen from here on out. Savannah has opened John’s eyes to the world and he sees things he has never seen before – considers people and feelings in ways he never has before.

Overall, the book is light and a fun read. There isn’t a lot of detail to the characters and it only took me a day to read, but I enjoyed it. I’m now looking forward to determining whether I like the book or the movie better – I’ll let you know! I’d give the book a 6 out of a possible 10.

5 Ways to Dress Up a Simple Ponytail

Ponytails are so easy to do, especially for girls with medium to long hair. You can skip the straightening, curling, and all the other styling chores and save a lot of time. But a regular ponytail can become really boring really fast. Below are 5 great ways to dress up a simple pony tail so your hairstyle is still easy but looks sophisticated and cute!

1. To the Side - Make a low ponytail to one side, just above and behind your ear. Let the hair fall elegantly down the shoulder and sweep your bangs to the side. This one is a little sloppy, but only requires a quick spray to keep in place and it’s really cute.

2. Flirty Ponytail - Use a barette to pull your bangs or the hair in the bang area straight back. Give that a quick spray so it will stay, and then make a ponytail at the base of your neck. This one looks more elegant, but it only takes a few more seconds so you’re still out the door in a hurry!

3. Red Carpet Ponytail - Spritz your hair before pulling it up, and make the ponytail super loose. This looks great with hair that is curly or wavy with lots of body. Then, in the front, use a cute headband – preferably one with a comb on the underside so it pulls the bang area back and secures it. This can be elegant or casual and is really cute.

4. Spanish Flair – Pull the hair back tightly so that it’s smooth when you secure the ponytail. Then, pin an oversized flower to the side of the ponytail. This is a really pretty look that is perfect for a summer dress or jeans and a frilly top.

5. Messy and Cute Ponytail – For this one, pull the ponytail back and leave it loose so that the hair isn’t secured too tightly, but so that it will stay. You may want to spray it a bit too. Using bobby pins, pull portions of the ponytail up, twist them and then secure with the bobby pins to make a messy but flirtatious look!

Ponytails are youthful, fun, fast and they’re great for showing off your favorite pair of earrings! Enjoy the ideas above for your next ponytail day.

The Lovely Bones: Movie Review

I knew from the very second I saw the preview of this movie that I had to see it. It was one of those previews that really jumps right out and catches your interest right away.

An adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel, the story centers on Suzie Salmon, (like the fish) who is a teenage girl with the typical teenage girl problems. She loves to take pictures and has a super crush on a guy from school, who ends up asking her to meet.

Before she has a chance, Suzie is murdered by a neighbor, George Harvey. When she doesn’t show up at home, her parents of course become worried and call the police. While no body is ever found, a significant amount of blood is found, along with the hat Suzie’s mother made for her. Suzie’s father goes on complete meltdown mode, while her grieving mother accepts what has happened and tries to move on.

Meanwhile, Suzie does not go to Heaven, but instead, remains in limbo in a place called the ‘In-Between.’ It’s here where she’s able to keep an eye on her family and sort of communicate with her dad, who keeps hunting for her murderer. George Harvey seems to have slipped right under the radar, even after a close call with detectives where a bracelet Suzie was wearing is in plain sight of the cops.

The movie has some fabulous scenes that show this in-between place, but I found them to be a bit of a distraction and felt like there were too many of them, especially when I wanted to get back to the story and find out what happened. Still, the story was extremely interesting. It pulled me along, captivated, until the end.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Near the end, Suzie’s sister discovers the truth by sneaking into George Harvey’s house. In a close call, she manages to get out with a scrapbook the murderer has been keeping of all the girls he’s killed. Knowing he’s going to get caught, he takes the trunk with Suzie’s body to a sinkhole and pays to dump it. As he and the manager of the place are slowly making their way toward the hole with the trunk, you’re under the impression that a local ‘psychic’ girl is going to race in and stop them…to reveal the murderer for who he truly is.

Instead, her body is overtaken by Suzie, who takes the opportunity to get her kiss from the boy she was crushing on in school. Weird. Rather than being caught, the murderer dies in a freak accident involving an icicle while he’s trying to pick up another young girl. I wouldn’t say this was the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it was definitely entertaining. I’d recommend it and I’d give it a 7 out of a possible 10.

It’s super easy to create a cute look with vintage clothing, and finding the items you want at a great price may be easier than you think.

Online Shopping – There are tons of vintage shops online where you can find great vintage accessories. They’ve been rescued, cleaned up and are now available to add glitz and variety to your wardrobe. Magic Kingdom

Hi there!

This weekend we went to Disney's Magic Kingdom. It was my 4 year old's first time. I can't describe with words (and that almost never happens to me! lol) the look on her face when she saw the princesses (which are her favorite!) right there in front of her.We had an amazing time.

As soon as I got home, I started to go thru the site to see what we had to offer that was Disney inspired.

The Halloween contest

Hello all.

Hope this week has been productive, balanced and satisfying for you thus far.

As promised, here is my Halloween contest for you. Of course, we are doing scary or horror movies but we won't be doing a countdown. There are way too many out there to waste this space with another one!

I will give you the year and a brief description of the movie and you guess the name of the movie. Not too difficult I promise! This is really all about first come first serve. So if you check the blog often, you will have a much better chance of guessing first.
And what will we give you for your scary movie knowledge?? How's a $50 gift card sound? I know, it sounded good to us too.

Here are some details: As I just said, this is not about a countdown, they are in no specific order. I pretty much picked movies that I like and I think all are well known. The movies range from 1968 to 2008. Here goes:

1. 2005 - A group of ladies, a cave and some unexpected inhabitants.
2. 1973 - Based on a true story but they changed the main character's sex. The mom is an atheist, the daughter shows the mom that it's not that black and white with a little help from a young and an old priest and the oldest nemesis of all time.
3. 1968 - An unsuspecting new wife, an eerie bunch of intrusive neighbors and a new addition to the family...
4. 1980 - A writer, a hotel and the worst case of cabin fever which results in creepy twins, a disturbed child and "Heeeree's Johnny!"
5. 1987 - A puzzle, an escapee from hell and his cohorts which would scare the wits out of Freddy Kreuger!
6. 1991 - An ambitious FBI trainee and a twisted but well-mannered psychiatrist... "It puts the lotion on its skin"...
7. 1978 - Also based on a true story (Though there is controversy about it). A couple gets a real estate bargain in NY or is it?? I guess you do get what you pay for. Flies, a scared priest and eerie red eyes.
8. 1976 - She has a special talent, a ridiculously religious mom and a prom gone awry...
9. 1999 - Holy psycho bat man! I loved this movie! A widow holds auditions for dates and that's when things get really goood, or bad, depending on your gore sustaining level, lol.
10. 2008 - A young ambitious reporter hitches a ride to a fire and it all goes downhill from there. This is a remake of a Spanish film made in 2007. Both extremely good!
11. 1976 - OK, I was only going to do 10 but I just loove this movie. A little kid, a rottweiler and a very protective nanny...

Hello everybody.

Hope you had a good Monday or at the very least a bearable Monday. Mine wasn't too bad, so far so good.

In keeping with the Halloween motif, we have decided to profile a few of our RAR! Monster items.

The one above is one of my favorites and finally back in stock! This messenger bag comes in Khaki Beige (as shown above), Crunchberry Pink (don't you love this name?) and Black (I think we ran out of create names at this point, lol).
The organic long sleeve shirt is perfect for the fall/winter season (we have no such thing in South Florida but why deprive the rest of the world? lol). 100% organic cotton and sizes from small to x-large. Love it!
The sling bag is another one of my favorites, wait, I think I just love this brand! All colors are shown above but I just had to throw the color names out there, Khaki Beige, Tulip Pink, Cilantro Green and Bluegrass, cute, huh?

How has your week been?

In South Florida we have two seasons, rain and no rain. We were told the day before yesterday that rain season was officially over and then it proceeded to rain yesterday and today... ahhh the weather predictions... art or science or neither???

Anyway, I wanted to show you guys our new items... tooo cute!

Hi everyone. I have missed you all!! I hope you are all happy, productive and sane : )

My sister and I went to watch Julie and Julia 2 weeks ago. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did. I guess I related a lot more to Julie than I thought I would. A wannabe writer with an average job while it seems that everyone around her is so involved and passionate about their job. Yeah, I can relate. Without giving too much away for those of you who haven’t seen it (and are planning to), I really enjoyed how her life evolves right along with her blog.

It was really nice to share time with my sister and escape the daily grind for a little while. We ate popcorn (yeah, with lots of butter… Julia would approve!), drank soda and turned off our cell phones. Maybe I enjoyed the whole dynamic of the day. I even donated blood afterwards.

Just a little reminder to take some time out of your everyday grind and escape with your family/friends and just enjoy!

Viña Del Mar , Chile :)

Viña Del Mar, Chile... has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Maybe I am a little bias since I was born in Chile... but in Santiago the capital, not Viña Del Mar.

A few weeks back I went to Viña Del Mar and this is what we saw (sorry for the bad picture, my camera's battery died and I took this with my iPhone).

Some of the most beautiful beaches EVER! Of course, in Chile it's winter now and would never in our wildest dreams even think of getting in that cold Pacific Ocean, but from what the locals told us, some people don't even get in the water during summer time because it's way too cold.
The exception would be for the Seals that were on top on the rocks. There were about 60 seals in the water trying to go up the mountain of rocks... some of them did make it, there were about 12 on the top
I'm still looking for that picture).
Just beautiful.....

While we were visiting we came across a few locals who were very crafty with their hands and were kind enough to make some items for our store. I will post some of them now, but there's more to come. A long way for these items to travel.... we hope you enjoy
them.

Hello all. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

I had to go get my Driver's License renewed yesterday. I finally have a license picture that doesn't look like a celebrity mug shot, lol.

I know you've been reading the blog lately and wondering, who is this witty writer? Who posts these incredibly funny messages??? No? OK, maybe you 're not wondering that but in any case, I wanted to introduce myself. I am Alexis' aunt. Since she's busy taking care of Khloe, her Shitzu, and dealing with school, they thought they would have guest bloggers and they chose me! You lucky dogs!!! LOL.

I have an 18 year old daughter and a 4 year old toddler (well, actually, she turns 4 next week). As you can imagine I have my hands full with a now "legal" (she reminds me every second) teenager and a preschooler but I wouldn't have it any other way. It is a blast.

I buy lots of stuff from http://www.girlzlyfe.com/ because aside from supporting my niece Alexis, I get lots of cute, cool, useful stuff for the girlz and my other baby, my 5 yr old rottweiler.
